During Nursing Week, RNAO in collaboration with NPAO, are again promoting the role of nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who have additional education and the authority to diagnose, treat, and prescribe certain medications and diagnostic tests for their patients. Changes to legislation announced late last year will now expand their scope of practice to include setting and casting bone fractures.

During Nursing Week 2010, the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), in collaboration with the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario (RPNAO), and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term care are re-launching a public awareness campaign (May 10-16th) to convince people that nursing is a great career choice.
More than 1,500 posters will be displayed on the Toronto Transit Commission’s subways and buses. Posters will also be displayed on GO Transit trains and 30 billboards across Ontario. The posters feature real nurses who work in hospitals, public health, home care, and long-term care. For more information about a career in nursing, please contact Carrie Scott at 1-800-268-7199, ext 256.
